A groovebox for the Launchkey Mini

Morsel turns the pads, knobs and screen of the Launchkey Mini MK4 25 into a sampler, step sequencer and song arranger. Free, in Chrome or in Ableton Live 12.

What it does with the Launchkey

Pads

Play a kit of 16 sounds, write steps, mute tracks, switch patterns and play the chops of a sample. They light up in each sound's colour.

Knobs

Eight encoders on pages: a pad's tuning, decay and filter, eight effects on every track, the mix and the tempo.

Screen

Shows what you're working on: the sound's waveform, the steps, and what every knob is set to. The same screens as on the Launchkey above.

Keys

Play a keys track, a synth with presets or a sample of your own, and record it into the pattern. On a drum track they play the pads.

Play and Record

Record what you play into the loop, or sample a mic, a browser tab or Morsel itself and chop it onto the pads.

Two ways to run it

In Chrome or Edge

All of Morsel: everything on the Launchkey, and on screen an editor for the sequencer, chopping, the mixer and the song.

  • Plug in the Launchkey and open Morsel in Chrome or Edge on a computer.
  • Nothing to install, and it works offline once it has loaded.
  • Your samples and projects stay in your browser.
Open Morsel

In Ableton Live 12

A control surface script that gives Live the same Launchkey: Morsel's pad modes and encoder pages, step sequencing, clip launching, Live's browser and chopping a sample onto a Drum Rack, all on the Launchkey's screen. Works with Live 12 Lite, which comes with the Launchkey.

Download for Live

How to install

  1. Unzip it and put the Morsel folder into Remote Scripts in Live's User Library (make the folder if it isn't there): Mac~/Music/Ableton/User Library/Remote Scripts WindowsDocuments\Ableton\User Library\Remote Scripts
  2. Restart Live.
  3. In Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI, remove the Launchkey Mini MK4 control surface and add Morsel, with Input Launchkey Mini MK4 25 (DAW Out) and Output Launchkey Mini MK4 25 (DAW In).
  4. Under the ports, set the DAW Out input to Track and Remote on, and keep Track on for MIDI Out.

Questions

Do I need a Launchkey?

To play it, yes: Morsel is made for the pads, encoders, buttons and screen of the Launchkey Mini MK4 25. Without one you can still look around: load samples, click the pads on screen and program steps.

Does it work with other Launchkeys?

It's made and tested with the Launchkey Mini MK4 25. Other models aren't supported.

Which browsers work?

Chrome or Edge (or another Chromium browser, like Brave or Arc) on a computer. Morsel talks to the Launchkey and its screen over Web MIDI, which Safari doesn't have. Phones and tablets aren't supported.

Where are my samples and projects?

In your browser, on your computer. Nothing is uploaded and there's no account. Clearing the browser's data for this site deletes them, so keep a copy with Project → Export… in the app.

Does it work offline?

Once it has loaded, yes. Chrome and Edge can also install it as an app.

Can I use Morsel and Ableton Live at the same time?

Not on the same Launchkey: only one of them can have its DAW mode. Close Live before you open Morsel, or use Morsel for Live inside Live instead.

Which Live does Morsel for Live need?

Live 12, Lite included (the Launchkey comes with it). It works on its own: you don't need the browser app for it.

What does it cost?

Nothing. Morsel is free, with no ads and no account, under the MIT licence.

Plug in the Launchkey and play

Open Morsel in Chrome or Edge. It loads the Factory kit, and you're playing.
